An unassuming fellow inherits a prized family heirloom that is also a prized spiritual relic - the mantle (or linen headcovering) of Jesus Christ. When Jesus' body was discovered missing from the tomb, the apostle John takes the mantle, whic had been neatly folded and set aside, apart from the other linens. This relic allows the wearer to not only become closed to Jesus, but to be able to perform myriad amazign feats from flying to invisibility to performing miracles. I cannot say enough about how wonderful The Mantle is. This book was written by Mark F Hobson, PhD, CAGS, someone who I had the honor and privilege of working with at Southern New Hampshire University. I highly recommend this book! Up·lift·ing /əpˈliftiNG/ (adjective) - inspiring happiness, optimism, or hope.  That is how I would describe this book.  About one third of the way through, I realized that no matter my mood when I started, I always felt good as I read it. Uplifted.


The Mantle is a burial cloth that covered the head of Jesus after his death.  This book is historic fiction and tells the story of the Mantle of Jesus and how it was passed down through the ages and how it inspired its owners to help others and spread their faith.


In alternating chapters it describes the history of the Mantle and the present day use by the author, college administrator John Mark Hopkins. It describes the fascinating 2000 years of history of the Mantle, with appearances by such luminaries as the Apostle John, Pope Gregory IX, Marco Polo, and dozens of others. The story takes us on travels around the world from the Holy Land to Turkey to London to Venice and eventually to New Bedford, MA and finally to Hopkins’ home in New Hampshire.


In the present day, it describes how Hopkins follows the directives of Jesus, sending him on adventures to break up notorious drug rings in such places as Boston, El Salvador and Dublin and to also build community centers in in underserved areas of the western US.  The author deftly weaves these seemingly disparate narratives together by alternating between lively historic and present day chapters.


I described the book as uplifting, but why is it uplifting?  It is for each reader to draw their own conclusions but for me the cloth Mantle represents Faith and how Faith can inspire an individual to work against evil and for good in this world.  While none of us can ever possess the Mantle and we can never perform superhuman feats such as flying or being invisible, we can accomplish many of the end results achieved by Hopkins using the Mantle.  We can help those in need and we can work against those promoting evil. We can live our lives in a better way. It is in this way that the book was inspiring and uplifting.  Great read.
